Make more of what you have, urge store designers

Revise, remix, reinvent and reuse. This was the advice given by a panel of store designers at the World Retail Congress in Barcelona in a session on Store Design During a Recession. Denny Gerdeman, chief executive and co-founder of US design consultancy Chute Gerdeman, suggested that even mannequins could be refreshed.



Flippers Pizzeria Announces Restaurant Redesign

Flippers Pizzeria has developed a new store format and logo design, working with retail design experts Chute Gerdeman Retail, the Columbus, Ohio-based branding and design firm.

The new warm and casual design communicates Flippers’ freshness message while maintaining its operational efficiencies.



Merchandising Inspiration from around the Globe

In March, El Segundo, Calif.-based Mattel opened the first flagship Barbie store on one of the busiest shopping streets in Shanghai. The 40,000-square-foot, six-story shop holds the world’s largest collection of Barbie dolls, fashion, cosmetics, accessories, and other Barbie products.

The Barbie Design Center, where girls design their own Barbie is on the doll floor (dolls, doll gallery, doll accessories, books). This activity was planned by Chute Gerdeman Retail and designed by Slade Architecture. The Barbie Fashion Stage, planned and designed by Chute Gerdeman Retail, where girls take part in a real runway show, is also on this floor.

"This store makes experiences and memories. It allows parents to have quality time with their kids,” Dennis Gerdeman says. “In the end, the photos and other customized accessories are cherished items.”

Barbie's turned 50 and strangely remains as shapely and improbable as ever—there must be a very ugly portrait somewhere in her attic. Perhaps it's in Shanghai's House of Barbie, which opened earlier this month and is a multi-floored, 40,000 sq ft homage to this icon of unachievable femininity.
